12/25/2023 0 Comments Dnd forgotten realms wealth![]() ![]() Entirely up to the person running the game. Through Planescape or Spelljammer, your character could travel from the planet of Toril, through magical portals and wild dimensions, and end up in Eberron or wherever. Some of the settings aren't 'planets' at all - Ravenloft is a pocket of existence floating on the edge of another dimension, a prison for its Dark Lord, Strahd.Īnd, as I say, some settings like 'Planescape' and 'Spelljammer' are more like Multiverses than Universes, in which a Dungeon Master can connect as many or as few of the other worlds as they like. Most of the names of settings are also the names of the planet, but not always - Eberron is the planet of the Eberron setting, Exandria is the name of the setting and the planet on which Critical Role's stories are all found, but Greyhawk's planet is Oerth, and as I mentioned, Dragonlance's planet is Krynn. Sometimes the mythology between them is similar (a lot of them have some overlapping gods, for example), sometimes they're wildly different. Most settings have their own planet, with their own mythology. I just wanted to be clear that it's just one possible setting in D&D's massive canon of worlds and stories. I'll leave answering the Toril specific questions to more experienced Forgotten Realms lore experts. So if you do expand your D&D beyond BG3 and into tabletop play, be aware that what you learn here regarding Elves on Toril could be wildly different to whatever you try next, if the Dungeon Master chooses a different setting for their game or you play a computer game not set in the Forgotten Realms. Most of the DMs I play with have their own world. On top of that, a large number of Dungeon Masters make their own worlds up. and there's also Exandria, originally a 'homebrew' (unofficial personal creation of home players) D&D world created by Critical Role Dungeon Master Matt Mercer, now effectively made an official setting by collaboration books between Critical Role and Wizards of the Coast (this world can also be seen in the Amazon Prime cartoon 'The Legend of Vox Machina'). then there's worlds that started out as part of a different creation, like Ravnica and Theros (both from 'Magic: The Gathering') that then became D&D worlds via official cross over books. then there is Planescape and Spelljammer, two multiverse 'settings' where all those other worlds are interconnected and you can travel between them. Others include (but are not limited to) Greyhawk, Mystara, Ravenloft, Eberron, Dragonlance's Krynn, Dark Sun's Athas. It is probably the most well known and widely used (being the first default setting of the current edition of D&D as well as the setting of D&D's most well known games), but it is far from the only one, and many of them differ dramatically. The Forgotten Realms is one of over a dozen official D&D settings. So, you're not so much learning D&D lore so much as you are specifically learning Forgotten Realms lore. Baldur's Gate takes place on Toril, and the continent of Faerûn, along with other stories in the Forgotten Realms setting (which also includes famed locations like Neverwinter, Waterdeep, and Icewind Dale).
